Santa in the sun….
When living in Australia I was always amazed at Christmas time how the traditions of the Northern Hemisphere were translated into the 30 degree summer heat of an Australian Christmas.
The images of Santa in a red wool suit with a giant beard, penguins, fake snow, reindeer, Norwegian pine trees, roasting turkeys, flaming puddings, and robins in snow somehow fitted in amongst the reality of beach balls and burning sunshine.Even if the day itself lacked some of the focus and excitement of a “proper Christmas” (frankly there’s not such a need for excessive Christmas celebrations when it’s warm and sunny outside and the surf is up...)all the visual references to the Christmas that us “Poms” love were still there. Did I get homesick? Well, I did find myself one particualry hot December evening donning ugg boots and a ski jacket to enjoy an ice cold vodka at Minus 5 Ice Bar in Circular Quay - it was fun and reminiscent of ski holidays and ‘home’ but stepping back out into the balmy December evening and heading home to the beach was always going to be better than getting on the District Line surrounded by people coughing and sneezing!
